According to Ajax, Henderson's contract, which was set to expire on June 30, 2026, has ended immediately. Henderson has also released a statement expressing his gratitude to the club and its fans for their support during his time at Ajax.
He said, "It was an honour to play for Ajax, and even more so to captain the team. My only regret is that we didn't achieve more success for our amazing supporters. I'm confident that we will see them celebrate major titles again soon."
Henderson also thanked the people of Amsterdam for making him and his family feel welcome. He mentioned that he will share a fuller and more personal thank you to the club and its supporters at a later time.
After playing 57 games for Ajax, Henderson will now look for a new club ahead of the new season. As a recent returnee to the England national team, he has shown that he can still perform at the highest level.
There have been suggestions that Henderson might return to the Premier League, possibly to his former club Sunderland. However, Sunderland has already strengthened their midfield with the arrival of two new players, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki.
It remains to be seen whether Sunderland will look for another experienced midfielder to lead the team. Henderson has a rich honours list, including the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, and two League Cup titles during his 12-year stay with Liverpool.
